Meditation poses

The correct position for meditation is not some strictly defined and set position for everyone. If you feel uncomfortable during the session, change your posture so that you don’t get distracted by the pain and lose your concentration. It is correct to choose the most convenient option for yourself, because there are many variations of the body position during meditation: you can sit, lie, stand, even walk.

Choose a comfortable body position

Here are the meditation poses that you can try to determine which option suits you best:

  • Open. Sitting on a chair or lying down. The hands are placed palms up. You can lean on the back of a chair. It is used in meditations with light.
  • The lotus. Classic sitting position. The legs are bent at the knees, the feet are directed upwards and are on opposite hips. My knees touch the floor. The back is smooth.
  • Half-lotus. Suitable for those who find it difficult to correctly accept the previous position. You need to sit with your legs bent, but on the opposite hip we have only one foot, the second-on the floor. My knees touch the floor.
  • Two moons. In a sitting position, you need to connect your legs to make a circle (moon). We also round the back, relax the stomach and lower the chin a little.
  • A hero. You should get on your knees, spread your feet and drop to the floor so that the outside of your thigh touches your calves.
  • On a chair. You need to sit on the chair so that you do not touch the back. Suitable for practicing techniques on the road.
  • The dead man (Shavasana). Lie on your back with your hands, palms up, on either side of your body. The legs should be slightly apart and relaxed. Beginners should not choose this option, as there is a high risk of falling asleep during the session.

What is important to consider?

In order not to encounter unpleasant sensations during meditation, watch your back: it should be flat (the exception is the pose of two moons). If you still slouch, put a pillow under your buttocks. But excessive effort and tension in the course of practice can also not be called correct. Your task is to relax, calm down, and not turn into a tin soldier. When thinking about how to sit properly while meditating, choosing the best option, do not forget to listen to your body.
